Aschaffenburg, a city in Northwest Bayern near Hesse was already a home city to the wealthy Kaltofen brothers Heinrich, Johann, and Konrad in 1483. They were members of the Convent of St. Peter and Alexander. Clearly there is still a long way backward to go before finding the earliest Kaltofens. The Kaltofen Altar displayed below is on loan from the Bavarian National Museum. "The center piece of the altar was dedicated to the convent church St. Peter and Aledander in Aschaffenburg by the brothers Kaltofen in 1483 shows the coronation of St. Mary. Heinrich, Johann and Konrad Kaltofen, members of a wealthy family in Aschaffenburg, were all members of the convent. The altar is an example of the wealth and influence of the convent and its members in medieval times."
