The Mouse Seismograph!
For some time residents of Point of Pines Rd. in the Long Pond area of Freetown have heard the noise and felt the shaking of blasts from a local quarry. When they got tired of plates falling from their dishracks, and cracks in their foundations, they decided to do something about the ruckus. The neighbors installed a high resolution, triaxial, data-logging seismograph provided by Science and Technology Devices, Inc. of Lexington, Massachusetts.
The seismograph data logger (a Compaq 386 PC) was installed in a shed in March 1999. The seismograph itself was bolted to a concrete pier in a back yard about a quarter mile from the quarry. Data was collected over a period of four months. On August 1, 1999 the seismograph and computer were returned to Boston Chemical Data Corp.
A slight hitch occurred when the monitor refused to light up on booting. The hard drive sounded OK but there was no boot up chime. A second monitor was hooked up with the same result. On opening the hood of the machine, the mouse was found to be improperly installed INSIDE the computer. (see below)
